Getting Better

My wife, Tammy, has recently claimed her eyesight is somehow improving. I told her I’d believe it when I see the test results from the ophthalmologist. Generally speaking, time is not kind to human beings. As an old friend of mine used to say, “Getting old is not for sissies.”

But there is good news! Recently, I’ve been reading about a study that shows that the older people get, the happier they seem to be. Happiness seems to peak at about 18 years old for most folks and then declines until the early 50s. After that, it just gets steadily better.

That makes sense to me. The older I get, the more clearly I see things about myself and the world. I no longer feel the need to prove myself like I might have when I was younger, but instead desire more than anything to be present for God and for others.

As the Apostle Paul wrote, “Though our out natures are wasting away, our inner natures are being renewed day by day.” Young or old, good vision or bad – we “grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.” I don’t know about you, but that makes me happy!
